Lizzie’s War Review
Finally after a few “meh” books we got a great one! Lizzie’s War tells the story of Lizzie and her time during World War II in London. While Lizzie’s War is a sequel to the novel Lizzie’s Secret, the author does a great job of bringing any new readers up to speed before jumping into where Lizzie currently is. I love when authors do this because it means that the reader can jump in at any point without having to go track down the other works if they choose not to. That being said, Ms. Clarke does a phenomenal job of introducing and growing the characters that it made me actually want to go back and read the first novel!
As for the story itself, Lizzie is a mother who just sent her guy off to fight in the War, meaning she’s now raising her child alone. I’m sure a lot of people can relate to that. On top of that she now has to make a living providing for her child while being “stalked” by some mysterious person. While I personally don’t relate to either of these situations, I never felt disconnected from the character which is a great thing. Another thing that I liked about Ms. Clarke’s writing is that she never had Lizzie coming off as needing to felt sorry for. Yes Lizzie was going through all of these things but you never felt like she was just a “damsel in distress” character. Nor did you feel like she was a bullheaded character that was never going to have any setbacks.
Overall, Lizzie’s War is a great book that if you’re a fan of historical fiction you definitely need to pick up!
