Before I get into the review of the Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock I want to talk about something. There has been a lot of controversy recently dealing with beauty bloggers, bloggers in general, brands, and disclosure. It seems that there are some beauty bloggers who are getting paid by brands to do sponsored posts, no problem with that I do it myself occasionally, the problem is that these particular bloggers are getting paid and not disclosing it. It has been known for a few years now that as a blogger who receives either money or product for a post that you must disclose this to your readers. I do this via a button at the top of the post (as do others), some do it via disclosure in the post title, and some put it as text at the bottom of the post. If you are getting paid to do social media along with that then you must disclose with a hashtag in said social media. I wanted to take the time out to assure my readers that any time I get a product via sponsored post, sent for review, or pr package that I will, and have always, let you know this via disclosure at the top or in the case of sponsored social media via hashtag. I also want to assure you that products that I review will always have my 100% honest review. If I don’t care for a product I will make sure to let YOU know. With that said, I also want to thank Joico for the beautiful package that their PR team sent my way. Inside was a journal that says “Joiful Little Secrets”, a beautiful key necklace, and their newly released K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock.
Now that I’ve got that off my chest and out of the way let’s talk about the product itself shall we? One of the first things that I did when receiving the Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock was, of course, read the back of the package to see exactly how it worked. The first thing that I noticed at the top of the instructions is that Joico has the pH listed (3.5 to 4.5 if you’re wondering) and as a Cosmetology student I was so happy to see that! I’m going to get a little sciency on you and take you back to your high school science classes for just a moment. The pH scale measures from 0 to 14 with 0 to 6.9 being acidic, 7 being neutral, and 7.1 to 14 being alkaline. When it comes to hair, human hair sits at a 4.5 to 5.5 on the pH scale while most products that change the hair sit above a 7 (temporary hair colors have a pH of about 7 or 8, semi-permanent hair color about 8 or 9, permanent hair color with an oxidative process 9 or 10, and a chemical relaxer about 11 to 13). Now going from the 5 to a 9 may not seem like a big jump when you’re looking at just the base number but there is actually a 10 time difference between each level, so going from 5.5 to 9 is actually a 10,000 time difference! If you’re coloring your hair you obviously don’t want to use products on a regular basis that have a high pH as this will not only continue to damage the hair but it will also continue to allow the cuticle to open allowing the color to escape quicker.
I told you all that to basically tell you that a product with a 3.5 to 4.5 pH for color treated hair is quite good! lol
The Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock is used by applying to clean, damp hair, massaged through to the ends, and then left on for 3 – 5 minutes before rinsing. This should should leave the hair replenished, softer, shinier, and silkier. It’s like a boost for color treated hair that is starting to look dull. However, it can also be used for non-color treated hair to get a similar boost. If you do not have color treated hair I wouldn’t use it that often nor would I use that much. The Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock also has a pleasant scent that leaves the hair smelling good. At $20.00 for a 4.7 oz. bottle I plan on recommending Joico K-Pak Color Therapy Luster Lock to my clients who have or are getting color treated hair. I also plan on trying more Joico products in the near future to see what the rest of their lines are like!
