Plaid Cow Society Review || Southeast by Midwest #subscriptionbox #plaidcowsociety

Awhile back the Hubs and I were contacted by Plaid Cow Society to see if we would be interested in trying out their meat subscription service. At the time we were trying to cut back on what we were eating so we thought a service that offered portions of meat that wasn’t frozen and would be delivered directly to the house would be a great option to partner with vegetables that we got from the grocery store. I can tell you that the amount of meat that came in the box was amazing, 6 – 7 pounds of meat, and looked fresher than a lot of meat at our local grocery store and don’t even get me started on how tender and juicy it was! Sadly you’re going to have to take my word for this because the photos I took of the meat got eaten by either my camera or my memory card. That being said, I was able to save photos of the meals we created with the delicious meat we received!

The first meal that we used the meat create was Steak Salads. We used the Tri Tip Steak that we received and pan seared it until it reached the doneness we wanted before topping the salads with it. The Hubs portion of the meat was cooked medium-rare while mine was medium and once done we cut against the grain, I believe, so it would keep the tenderness. We then used lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, etc. to build the salads and then placed the meat on top. The Hubs chose to leave his cut slices intact while I chose to cut mine into bit size pieces and mix them into my salad. Lastly, the Hubs topped his with a Vinaigrette while I topped mine with ranch dressing. The meat was great in the salads but I wasn’t to impressed by the lettuce that we purchased.

The second meal that we created was a homemade salisbury steak style meal using the Sirloin that we received. This time I chose to cut the meat into chunky pieces ahead of time and then place it in a pan with some mushrooms to sear down. Once they had reached the doneness that I was looking for I made a roux the drippings to create a gravy. While that was cooking I made some Instant Mashed Potatoes, had to save some time somewhere, and some corn. I plated the mashed potatoes and the corn before deciding to plate the Sirloin by using it as a topper to the mashed potatoes. The Hubs and I LOVED this entire meal!

The third meal that we created was a simple “Steak & Potatoes” featuring the NY Strip, of course! To cook the red potatoes we popped those in the oven after drizzling with some olive oil and some garlic. We cooked the spinach using a steamable bag of spinach and once it was done cooking we added butter, salt, and pepper for additional flavor. As for the NY Strip we actually just placed that on our countertop “George Foreman” style grill and cooked it one way for a few minutes and then flipped & rotated it for a few more minutes to get the nice “grill marks”. I LOVED the steak and spinach of the meal but wasn’t too fond of how the potatoes turned out which is shame since they’re like my favorite food!

Lastly, we created a kind of Burgers with Baked Potatoes style meal using the Skirt Steak that we received. For the potatoes we cooked them in the microwave and then topped with butter, salt, pepper, shredded cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits. As for the meat, we cut it in half before cooking and then again decided to go with the countertop grill to cook it with. This was another meal that was absolutely delicious!

We actually did freeze some of the meat that we received, two packs of ground beef, at the beginning of the week to use in a meal later in the week. We did this A. to see how the frozen meat held up and B. because we knew that we probably wouldn’t get to it before it went bad as we actually had other things between these meals as it was. The meat actually held up wonderfully and we wound up browning it and using it in homemade chili…it was devoured before I could take a photo!

As for this subscription, you get 6 – 7 pounds of EDIBLE meat for $129 that can be used for multiple meals over either a week or multiple weeks if you choose to freeze the meat yourself. The meat you get is fresh not frozen, tender, grass-fed, and delivered right to your door with free shipping. If you have the money in your budget then this is a subscription I HIGHLY suggest you try out, especially if you’ve gotten weary of the meat at the grocery store. I do want to point out before I go that you’re not getting 7 pounds of like ground chuck or something…the 7 pounds that you get is a mix of steaks and ground beef!
