So Ulta no longer sails my Holy Grail shampoo and conditioner. I know this is such a first world problem but when you have long curly hair that LOVES to tangle right in the middle of the back of your scalp and right at the base of the neck on the underneath and you find a shampoo and conditioner that helps that, you mourn when you can no longer get it. When I received the Ouai Shampoo and Conditioner for Medium Hair from Influenster, I was intrigued but didn’t know it it would dethrone my Holy Grail or not. Is the Ouai for Medium Hair my new Holy Grail? Keep scrolling to find out.
About the Ouai for Medium Hair
The full-size Ouai for Medium Hair comes in either 10 oz. / 300 mL plastic bottles or 32 oz. / 946 mL pouches that can either be used to refill the plastic bottles or put into your own bottles. The Ouai for Medium Hair retails for either $28.00 each for the 10 oz. shampoo and conditioner or $56.00 each for the 32 oz. pouches.
Ouai claims that their new range of shampoo and conditioner is designed for different hair types; fine, medium, and thick. This is done by having different ingredients for each one. According to Ouai the fine shampoo and conditioner is for fine hair and uses keratin and biotin to strengthen with hemp extract and chia seed oil to nourish. The thick shampoo and conditioner uses keratin to strengthen, marshmallow root to smooth, and shea butter and avocado oil for combating frizz. Lastly, the medium shampoo and conditioner also strengthens with keratin, babassu and coconut oil nourish, and kumquat extract adds shine.
Ouai for Medium Hair Review
I ended with the Ouai for Medium Hair at the end because that is what I received and what I am reviewing. If the babassu sounds familiar but you can’t quite pinpoint where you’ve heard it before, Tarte. Tarte has started using babassu in a lot of their products in the last year or so and claims that the products with babassu are super moisturizing. For the Medium Hair Shampoo and Conditioner I agree that the babassu and coconut oil really do add a lot of hydration and nourishment to the hair.
As for the kumquat extract adding shine, my hair has been shiny but no more so than any other shampoo that adds shine. I will say that the keratin adding strength is something that I have seen an improvement on. My Holy Grail strengthened my hair as well but when I switched to a different shampoo and conditioner in between it and the Ouai I noticed I was having more issues with shedding and breakage when using the invisibobble, which wasn’t an issue before. Switching to the Ouai for Medium Hair those issues have gotten better but not like what they were with my Holy Grail. Lastly, I want to mention that there is an added fragrance in this shampoo and conditioner line. All three types have a fragrance called “Mercer Street” which is a mix of orange, peony, magnolia, jasmine, musk, and orris. Honestly, I can’t pick out any individual scent (and if I could and it was one of the florals it would have went right out the bathroom window), to me it just smells like I went to a high end salon.
Final Thoughts on the Ouai for Medium Hair
Back to the question at hand, did the Ouai for Medium Hair dethrone my Holy Grail? No, it did not. However, it’s also not as bad as some shampoos and conditioners I’ve tried recently either. Will I repurchase this? Yes, until I find something that keeps my hair from tangling, which is actually how I grade shampoos and conditioners these days. Do I think that you should purchase these? If you’re current shampoo and conditioner just aren’t doing it for you and you feel like you need something a bit more customized then yes. I think if Ouai came out and had a slightly more customizable situation like “Straight and Medium” or “Curly and Medium” then this would have dethroned my Holy Grail. However, if you current shampoo and conditioner make your hair look like it was professionally done at a high end salon, then you do you boo but could you let us know in the comments down below what you’re using…

I tend to buy the same haircare over and over because the fragrance of new ones often annoys me. I have found some I like (Saints and Sinners) but I’ll probably stick with my original. I like the idea of having the type of hair in the description.
I don’t understand some of the fragrances that haircare comes in. I can’t use Pantene because the scent actually burns my nose.
