Filming and doing a “What’s In My Cosmetology School Kit” is something that I wanted to do as soon as I knew I was accepted into Cosmetology School. I looked all over for videos of what to expect in my kit and wanted to bring another video to that lineup! Now I didn’t want to film the kit straight out of the box because honestly after being in school for a bit now I can tell you that isn’t realistic at all. Yes I got TONS of items in my kit but I’m not using them all at this time, some of the items may never be used (hello second dryer pik, I see you), and some needed to be upgraded/replaced. So I wanted to wait until I pretty much had my kit how I am going to have it most of the time before I did this post/video. Before I get into what is in the kit I want to tell you that the case that it was in did NOT come with the kit. I purchased the Hiker 2-in-1 4-Wheel Cosmetic Case off of Amazon to use as my case. This does have a second part but I’m not using it at the moment, you’ll see it more next semester. For a full look at the bottom portion of the case (what you see in the picture above) check out the video down below!
Before we get into any of the other items we have to talk about the manikin that I use. I am currently using the Miss Jenny Manikin Head, which has natural hair, and I use a Deluxe Manikin Clamp Set when I’m not using a stand at school. In the picture above “Little Miss”, we are encouraged to name our manikin’s, has Magnetic Roller’s, in alternating sizes, that are held in place with All Purpose Clips. She is currently rocking a side parted alternate roller set.
Speaking of clips…I currently keep four different types of clips in my kit. Two different sets of butterfly clips, 2″ Jaws and 3″ Rounded Jaws, to use for parting. A set of duckbill clips that at the moment I don’t use but that others in the class use for parting as well. A set of all purpose clips, the empty bag on the left, that I am currently using for roller sets. Lastly, a set of curl clips that I currently am using for pin curls!
These are the current chemicals in my kit, yes water IS a chemical! A generic water bottle was given to us in our kit, however, we have to keep everything labeled in our kits and writing was constantly coming off of that one so I decided to upgrade to this water bottle. I also like to keep a travel size shampoo and conditioner in my kit at all times, this is just a set that I got on sale at CVS one day. Lastly, I keep a bottle of Setting Lotion that was given to me by a classmate. This stuff is really great when mixed in with some of the water to get a nice curl on roller sets.
One of the more important things that I keep in my kit are my brushes and combs, note that you don’t see my shears in this post because they are actually not in my kit as we had to turn them into our professors for safety reasons. Starting at the top left we have a vent brush, a 7 row bristle brush, several styling/all purpose combs, two tint brushes but I have those set to the side for coloring/lightening next semester this one is actually from the Silk Elements 10 Piece Comb Kit (actually from a very similar but lower quality version from CVS) that I’m using to apply gel during finger waves, several rat tail combs but again I replaced those with a metal ended rat tail from the Silk Elements 10 Piece Comb Kit as they are better for sectioning, and a shampoo comb. Lastly, after getting the Silk Elements 10 Piece Comb Kit the Hubs and I were in Sally’s Beauty and he noticed the BeLissPRO Comb Kit and thought it would be perfect for me. I’ve yet to break it out as I think I’m going to save it until I have enough hours to work on clients and use it for them!
While I did get more electric items in my kit, the ones I am currently carrying are the Hot Tools Ionic Dryer and the Hot Tools 1″ Nano Flat Iron. I will say that neither of these are anywhere near the best on the market and I will need to upgrade/replace them before I either graduate or start working freelance, whichever happens first. However, I did go ahead and get a pretty cute flat iron travel case/mat which not only works as a case for the flat iron but a mat to protect my work surface!
Next I always keep some super stretch bands in both clear and black in closed containers in my case. Along with those I keep a holder of bobby pins in my case as well!
Currently I have a basic shampoo cape and a very pretty comb out cape (not the one this links to!). A shampoo cape is used for any wet/chemical service while the comb out cape is used for things like blow outs etc. While the comb out cape I have is very pretty and I have no intentions of replacing it if I can avoid it, I would like to upgrade my shampoo cape to having a better one for females, one for males, and a couple for kids.
I also like to keep a few “extra” items in my cosmetology school kit just in case I need them! I keep a flip brush to run through my hair if it needs it, I keep this in my kit so I don’t use any of my “client” brushes or combs which would unsanitize them. I keep a few pairs of NON latex gloves in my kit, this is very important as I am allergic to latex! For personal hygiene I keep a stick of deodorant and a toothbrush kit in my kit as well. Living in South Carolina I need the former after walking to the Caf and back and the latter is for anything stinky that may be in the Caf. Not pictured that I like to keep in my kit is a actually a few Kotex Pads. I like to keep these in my kit because you don’t know when A. you may need them or B. a classmate or other student may need them (hence why they aren’t pictured since these were taken right after class and I had lent out my last one!)
So there you have everything in my Cosmetology School Kit AT THIS MOMENT. Make sure to come back to see what else was in my kit and to come back next semester to see what gets packed into my kit then!
