I did a thing…that thing was resubscribing to Sephora Play in time for the July 2018 Sephora Play Unboxing. Was this a good thing? Or a bad thing? Check out the video below to find out or just keep scrolling!
July 2018 Sephora Play
Before we get into talking about the individual products let’s do a little bit of housekeeping shall we? The first thing I want to mention is that I will not be reviewing the products here. The way that I am doing subscription boxes now is that I will unbox them in the current month and that same post will have the review of the previous months products as well. As this is the first month of Sephora Play you’ll only be getting the unboxing. From there, the theme for the July 2018 Sephora Play was More of the Good Stuff. Essentially, the products in this box were supposed to be clean beauty products, meaning that they contain more good ingredients and less harmful ingredients. The Clean Beauty section of Sephora was recently overhauled to weed out products that had been added in that weren’t actually clean and add in more products that have become clean so this being the theme for this month wasn’t a surprise for me. Let’s learn more about the products that I got.
Briogeo Volumizing Spray
The first product in my July 2018 Sephora Play box is the Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng & Biotin Volumizing Spray. This spray is supposed to create fuller looking hair, enhance the thickness of the hair over time, and extend wash time. This is a 0.75 oz. sample and since the full-size is 5 oz. and retails for $20.00 that makes this a $3.00 value.
Drunk Elephant Moisturizer
The second product in my July 2018 Sephora Play box is the Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream. This moisturizer is a protein moisturizer that is supposed to be good for all skin types. This is a 5 mL sample and since the full-size is 50 mL and retails for $68.00 that makes this a $6.80 value.
Tarte Cleansing Gel
The third product in my July 2018 Sephora Play box ix the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Deep Dive Cleansing Gel. This cleanser is formulated with lavender, vitamin C, and anti-oxidant rich algae and can supposedly remove waterproof makeup as well. This is a 0.25 oz. sample and since the full-size is 5 oz. and retails for $25.00 that makes this a $1.25 value.
Tarte Lipstick
The fourth product in my July 2018 Sephora Play box ix the Tarte Color Splash Lipstick in Salt Lyfe. This lipstick is supposed to have a moisturizing and long-wearing formula in a cream finish. This is a 0.025 oz. sample and since the full-size is 0.12 oz. and retails for $21.00 that makes this a $6.13 value.
Tarte Blush
The fifth product in my July 2018 Sephora Play box is the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush in Paaarty. This blush is supposed to be long wearing and it was also the Sephora Birthday Gift a year or so back. This is a 1.5 gram sample and since the full-size is 5.6 grams and retails for $29.00 that makes this a $7.77 value.
Boscia Mask
The last product in my July 2018 Sephora Play box is the Boscia Matcha Magic Super Anti-Oxidant Mask. This mask is supposed to reduce redness and inflammation. This is a 10 mL foil packet sample and since the full-size is 77 mL and retails for $38.00 that makes this a $4.94 value.
Final Thoughts on July 2018 Sephora Play
The value for the July 2018 Sephora Play box is $29.89 and that is the only value for me. What I mean is that two of the benefits that Sephora pushes is that with your subscription you get a card that you can bring in with you until the end of the next month to get an additional 50 points with your purchase. Last month they made it where this could be added on with an online purchase and in all honesty that was the main reason I resubscribed, however, for July Sephora went back to it being in store only. My closest Sephora is two hours away and since I pay the $10 a year for the Flash Shipping I’m not going to pay the gas to drive two hours every month to get an additional 50 points so that value is not there for me. The second benefit they push is the in store play date they do each month but these are only done at select stores and not every store so if I’m not willing to drive 2 hours to Columbia, SC or August, GA WHY would I be willing to drive to Atlanta, GA. I actually just looked it up and these aren’t even held every month like they use to be, they’re now held every few months. WTF Sephora?!
Anywho, lets talk about the products. One of the products is a blush that I, and probably most other subscribers, already have since it was part of the Tarte Birthday Duo gift that ANY level of Sephora Beauty Insider can get. One of the products was a foil-packet, this was a sixth product but still they could have put it in a little tube since this is a mask and there is more in this packet than one use. THIS is why I hate foil-packets, especially ones this size, there is more product there than one use but unless you happen to have containers at home it’ll be hard to keep it from getting messed up for another use. I was happy to get the Tarte Cleansing Gel and the Tarte Lipstick but can we talk for a second about WHY I got three, THREE freaking Tarte products in my box. When I opened it I thought I messed up and accidentally subscribed to a Tarte subscription box and they just ripped off the Sephora Play bag. Speaking of Tarte though, I should mention that none of the three Tarte products have the Clean at Sephora seal on the Sephora site. All the other products in my bag do but those three do not. As this was supposed to be a clean box, and even if Tarte does use good and not bad products, if they don’t have the seal I don’t think they should have been included in the box. That may just be me though…

I hear you, Cassie. It doesn’t really make sense why there are 3 products from Tarte in the same box. I don’t have this box, but it seems that a lot of people are frustrated by what was offered this month.
Cassie
I’ve seen so many people upset with this months box! I’m hoping August is better and from the sneak peeks it’s already shaping up to be!
MarciaF
I subscribed to this for about 8 months and never once could use the extra points. If you can’t get to a store then what makes that something to care about? I don’t think I’ll go back to Play unless they change things up.
Cassie
I actually cancelled right before they charged for my August box for the same reason. I won’t be reupping until they make using the points online an permanent thing.
Cindy
That’s a lot of Tarte! This would be disappointing for me.
Cassie
Right?! I should have just ordered something from Tarte, got a full-size product to review, and they could have sent me a few free samples…sheez.
Never Say Die Beauty
I love Tarte Paaarty blush, but I agree with you. If you’re a Play subscriber, you are most likely a member of their loyalty program and already got the blush. I didn’t know what the shade was of the Tarte lipstick you got. Did you like it? The July bag didn’t make me sad that I cancelled. Glad to hear that the August bag will be better.
Cassie
I actually did really like it. This would be a good one to throw in your bag when you want something moisturizing and that doesn’t tend to run away from your lips and across your face lol
Kristina
Ohh, that lipstick looks so pretty and I love that blush.
Cassie
I really liked the lipstick!
Babi
Hmm in your shoes, I would be torn too! In my case, I just wish they would offer it in Canada so I could try it, at least!
Cassie
I can see your case. If it’s something that you can’t get where you are then even if it’s not good for us that can get it we’re at least getting it. I totally get that and I now wonder how many times I can say get lol

I actually do have to buy more TARTE – thanks for the reminder!!
Cassie
You’re very welcome!
