From now on Friday’s on the blog will be “Animal Day.” Essentially I’ll take pictures of all my animals between Friday of the previous week and Thursday of the current week and then on Friday I’ll post-up a blog post of all their happenings for the week. Some weeks I may focus more on one animal, however, they’ll all get their turn. This week will be an introduction to each of the animals so you can get to know them.
Oh and by the way, while y’all are reading this, the hubby and I are on a trip to SC. No we’re not moving into the house yet, we’re going to down to get some more stuff done in it. It’s a long story that will make a LONG blog post once everything is said and done.
Without further delay I bring you…The Namials, introduced in order of becoming a part of our family.
Lennon is short for John Lennon. He is a rescue bird that we got for free off of Craigslist, his previous owners hardly handled him and when they did they were more interested in letting him play with the cats. Due to the fact that Lennon was the first in our house he thinks he rules the house and will travel to the other animals quarters to investigate what they are doing. He does not talk or whistle any songs, however, he does a few wolf whistles and chortles. Lastly, he is bonded to Corky.
Ducky is another bird that we got from Craigslist, in a way she is a rescue bird but in a way she is not. We purchased Ducky from a lady who was taking very good care of her, she just didn’t have the time to devote to her anymore. Ducky is spoiled rotten and can do no wrong, especially when her and Lila are trying to get each other into trouble. Ducky has a very big vocabulary and will say things like “Ducky,” “Ducky Sweet,” “Trav, Trav, let the Duck out?” and soooo much more. As she is a Nanday Conure she is very mischievous and will get into anything that isn’t nailed down.
Corky is the most extreme of our rescue birds due to the fact that her previous owners maimed her. Corky belonged to a woman who passed away and her son got Corky. These people let their children use her as a tennis ball, let the cat and dog play with her, and to make it even worse they clipped her wing to the point that it won’t grow back. While being the same type of bird as Lennon, she has a much bigger vocabulary of whistles and even words. She can whistle “Pop Goes the Weasel,” can mimic a phone ringing, and a water bottle squirting. On top of that she will say phrases like”Hey, Corky. Corky’s a pretty bird, ::wolf whistle:: whose that pretty bird? Corky’s a pretty bird. Hey Cork-A-Dork {my name for her}” Since we got her, she and Lennon have become a bonded pair.
Update:Corky passed away January 2014. She caught a cold and due to her age was unable to fight it. She was a very loved bird who enjoyed several fulfilling years with us. She will be sorely missed.
Lila is a two-year-old Great Dane that we got from a breeder for my father-in-law. She was born in February of 2010, we received her at the beginning of April 2010, and he passed away at the beginning of July 2010. Lila is very sweet and LARGE dog. Did I mention she was large? In case I didn’t…She’s LARGE. How large you ask? Well on hind legs she’s taller than my hubby and he’s 6’3! She’s a typical Great Dane in the fact that 9 times out of 10 if you’re sitting down she’s trying to sit in your lap. When she wants something she doesn’t bark, instead she does this strange mooing sound. I’m not even kidding. She also has a habit of stealing all the socks in the house, don’t know what that’s about and really wish she would stop but she just carries them around in her mouth. Her sock habit has gotten so bad that she steals them off my mother-in-laws feet. While we wouldn’t pay to have another one like her…we also wouldn’t take any money in the world for her.
Boba is a two-year-old, oops one-almost-two-year-old Green Cheek Conure that we got from Petsmart. I say one almost two because we were told that he was a certain age and we found out later that he was much much younger than we were told. We originally got Boba because we had seen him in Petsmart before with a mate and they went and sold the mate and he seemed so sad. We got him, brought him back to the house, spent some time with him, and now he’s a really chipper little squirt. Boba has bonded to Travis, which is great because all the other birds were gotten mainly because Travis has always wanted a bird and the other ones bonded with other people. Boba will go nuts if Travis leaves the room and will not quiet down until he returns. He’s madly, deeply, insanely in love with a casserole dish that we use to give the birds a bath in. Travis kneels down in front of the sink, turns on the faucet, pulls out the dish, and if Boba is out of his cage he’s right there for bath time. And oh man does he enjoy a bath! He’s rolling around in the bowl, splashing around, dipping in and out of the water in the faucet.
Those are all the animals and a little bit about them. Feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think and even about some of your animals.
