I was recently approached about reviewing the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier and Bobbi Brown foundation. I think we can all agree that I HAD to say yes at the chance of reviewing a high end product without having to purchase it! So was the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier worth the high end price tag OR is this one that you should skip? Let’s find out!
About Bobbi Brown
Bobbi Brown Cosmetics was started by makeup artist Bobbi Brown. However, in 1995 Bobbi Brown sold her line to Estée Lauder (which also owns Becca Cosmetics, Clinique, MAC, and Too Faced to name a few). Bobbi Brown Cosmetics sells makeup, skin care, tools, and accessories. I would consider Bobbi Brown products to be high-end as they are purchasable in Sephora, Nordstrom, etc. but I would not consider them prestige. Lastly, the Bobbi Brown customer service page claims that their products are cruelty free, however, I could not find them listed on cruelty free websites or blogs so take that for what you will.
Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier
The Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier is a 1.4 fl oz. primer that retails for $38.00 and can be purchased at Sephora, Bloomingdale’s, Bobbi Brown, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, JC Penny, and Dillard’s. The Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier is a primer that claims to control oil, extend the longevity of foundation, balance the skin’s moisture level, and blur pores and even though it’s a mattifying primer the Bobbi Brown Primer can be used by all skin types. How does it do all of this? According to Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier uses Sodium Hyaluronate in helping balance the skin’s moisture level and prevent dehydration (which is what all of us dry skin people love to hear!). It also uses a “special powder technology” to absorb oil and provide “optical correction” for pores and imperfections. Lastly there is an innovative jellifying agent which allows the primer to have the matte finish while still having a breathable texture. The Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier is vegan and does not contain mineral oil, here are the ingredients it does contain:
Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier Review
All those claims sound amazing don’t they?! The claims were one of the reasons I agreed to review the primer…in all honesty I didn’t think that a primer that could could actually exist. Before we get into the review I’ll let you know that there is ONE thing that I didn’t like about the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier but we’ll get to that. Let’s start with the packaging. The Bobbi Brown Primer comes in a plastic tube, with a harder plastic rectangle lid, all housed in a basic black Bobbi Brown box. The primer itself is a dimethicone primer which means it has a silicone type texture to it. Unlike the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer, which is another more popular dimethicone primer, the Bobbi Brown Primer isn’t clear it’s instead a white product. That being said, it blends completely into the skin and doesn’t leave a white cast behind. Speaking of blending into the skin…
OMG the texture is so buttery and the Bobbi Brown primer blends into the skin so well. Once it was blended in not only were my large pores covered up but my eczema patches were blurred as well! I actually would have been perfectly fine just leaving the house with only the primer on it made my skin look THAT good! Of course the question then becomes as a primer does it work well with foundations? I actually found that I liked the way that foundations applied over the Bobbi Brown Primer versus both my favorite primer, which is a non-dimethicone primer, AND the Smashbox Photo Finish Primer. So now you’re probably wondering…what is it about the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier that I didn’t like. The answer to that…the DAMN lid. I’m not even kidding. That lid is so freaking annoying to get back on. It’s not like most other twist lids where you can put it on any ole way that you like and it will twist close and site correctly. If you don’t put the lid on perpendicular to the bottle when you twist it closed it winds up locking perpendicular instead of the correct way. Very annoying the first few times that you are closing it but honestly I’ll probably get use to it and it won’t be a big deal.
Final Thoughts on Bobbi Brown Primer
If I’ll get use to the lid after using it some more and that was really the only thing I disliked about the primer then you can probably guess that I recommend this primer. However, I’d actually take it a step further than that. While I like to have an illuminating / radiant primer on hand I also like to have a mattifying / pore filling primer on hand as well. I will say here and now that when I have the extra money the Bobbi Brown Primer Plus Mattifier WILL become my go to mattyfing primer! I highly suggest if you’re on the market for a mattifying primer to give it a try yourself!

This sounds like a very good primer for people who seek one that is mattifying!
Cassie says
It is a good one if you’re wanting that matte look. I think even when I want a more radiant look I’ll still use this one over my pores and then go in with the radiant primer.

Sounds like a good primer to have on hand for Summer!

It really is! I live in South Carolina and this helped the foundation actually stay on my face and not melt off!

It sounds like this primer is great for oily skin.
Cassie says
It probably would be! It also worked well with my really dry skin which I was surprised by!

BB is definitely not cruelty-free. They sell in China.
Cassie says
Yeah I didn’t think they were but they claim in their FAQ that they don’t test on animals with this statement: “We utilize the latest advances in non-animal safety testing and human volunteer testing to deliver products of the highest safety and quality to our consumers. We do not test our products or ingredients on animals, or ask others to test on our behalf, except where required by law” and a link to the Estée Lauder statement about it. I for sure don’t consider them cruelty free even if they claim not to test on animals due to the selling in China.

I’ve only more recently started drifting into their products. I’ve liked what I’ve tried so far.

I haven’t used this primer but it sounds like one that would be great for my skin. I wasn’t using primers much but I started to again since they can make a big difference with my large pores.
Cassie says
They really can! I can’t go without a primer due to my pores.

I think I will love that primer but I get what you said about the annoying part when closing it. :p
Cassie says
That was the only bad part about it lol

I am all about mattifying primers, since I’m dreadfully oily. It’s great to know this one is buttery and not siliconey, and that you can leave home with just this and not foundie! I will check it out in my next haul.

It sounds like a great primer! I do need to control some shine on my T-zone during the summer, but I don’t have really oily skin, so I appreciate the fact that they included hyaluronic acid.
