Semi-Charmed Summer 2013 Book Challenge

As much as I love beauty sometimes I need a little break from it and the blog. A night curled up reading in bed with the puppy, laying back in the recliner reading while the hubs plays a game, or just relaxing in a hot bath with a good book is usually how I do this. The problem with this is that when I go to the stores I usually head straight for the beauty items and by the time I’ve finished with those the hubs has that “I’m getting impatient” look in his eyes so I usually wind up skipping the book section. So how in the world do I keep up with knowing what to read?! It’s easy, I join book challenges and book clubs. I love them and I think part of why I love them is that the challenge and the interactions with other contestants or members makes me want to keep reading.

On Monday Megan from Semi-Charmed Kind of Life announced the topics for this years Summer 2013 Book Challenge and that is what this post is about. I’m going to give you the rules, the topics, and the preliminary books that I will be trying to read for this challenge. To keep up with what I’m reading for this challenge head to the brand new page on the blog that I just created, Book Challenges.

Semi-Charmed Kind of Life

The Rules:

  • Starts July 1st, 2013 and goes until September 30th, 2013. No books read before 12:00 am July 1st and after 11:59 pm September 30th will count for this challenge
  • There are to be NO rereads, unless otherwise noted
  • Each book has to be at least 200 pages, unless otherwise noted
  • Audio and digital books are allowed as long as their print format holds to all the previous rules
  • A book can only be used once, it can be moved to a different topic but it has to be removed from where it was at before
  • You can get a maximum of 200 points

The Topics:

  • Read any book you like as long as it follows the rules (5 points)
  • Read a book that is less than 150 pages long (5 points)
  • Read a book with a color in the title (10 points)
  • Read a book that is not the first in it’s series (10 points)
  • Read a book that it seem EVERYONE but you has read (15 points)
  • Read a banned book, must come from these lists (15 points)
  • Read a book written by a celebrity, celebrity must be famous from some other way than writing but the book can be either fiction or a memoir (20 points)
  • Read a book that is non-fiction but not a memoir (20 points)
  • Read a book that takes place in a state you have never been in (20 points)
  • Read a book that is at least 400 pages long (25 points)

  • Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg (Green)
  • Dead Ever After by Charlaine Harris (LAST in the series, I’m a sad panda)
  • Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks (I’m sure the feels will hurt with this one)
  • My Sister’s Keepr by Jodi Picoult (On THIS list in the 2009 section)
  • The Truth About Diamonds by Nicole Richie (Yeah… I’m pretty sure writing wasn’t her claim to fame)

  • Misery by Stephen King (Colorado)
  • The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (600 pages)

I want to see the movie and thought I should read the book before doing so. I’m assuming it’s like most of his other books in that I should have a box of Kleenex nearby for the ending.

I’m aanxious to hear what you think about Dead Ever After….I thought it was a safe ending to the serious but I actually liked it while I know many people who did not. My Sister’s Keeper was a fabulous book but make sure you have tissues-it’s a sobber1

I’m soooo excited to read that one you have no idea. I have to wait to July 1st to start though and it’s going to drive me crazy waiting lol. But it should give me time to read the two books on my review to do list before starting this challenge.

If you head over to the Semi-Charmed blog, which is linked in the post, you can leave her a comment and she says in the rules on her site that she’ll try to work with you and find something that you can do for that task. Hope that helps 🙂 And I like your name by the way that is very unique 🙂

Goodreads is sooo great. I love that you can update your status as you read the book (I’ve seen others do that but I haven’t figured out how yet)

This challenge sounds so fun!! I LOVE Safe Haven. It’s my favorite Sparks book. My Sister’s Keeper is one of my favorite books of all time. Made me fall in love with Jodi Picoult. Good luck with the Grapes of Wrath. It was the only book I could not read all the way through in high school.

I can’t believe My Sister’s Keeper is on the banned books list! People will ban anything these days. *sigh* But thanks so much for joining my challenge!! Best of luck. 🙂
