Today is my final showdown with Shondaland as I’m going to be giving my thoughts on the last of her shows that I watch. Last week I gave my thoughts on Season 9 of Grey’s Anatomy and the previous week I gave my thoughts on Season 6 and the series finale of Private Practice.
This week I’m giving my thoughts on Season 2 of Scandal.
Scandal

Season Two of Scandal starts with everyone dealing with the consequences of last season. Quinn is on trial for killing her boyfriend and several other people and then running. The case is abruptly dismissed when Olivia makes a secret call and lets the other person know that they are going to lose. David becomes obsessed with trying to find out who did this and winds up loosing his job in the process. He starts to date Abby, who is already cross with Olivia, to get more information about Olivia and how the case could have been dropped like it was. This lasts until Olivia has Harrison split them up by framing David for abusing an ex-girlfriend.
Huck, meanwhile, has been trying to attend AA meetings about his torturing people that he can’t get over. After a few sessions he meets a girl who he starts to talk-to and then date. His recovery keeps getting met by walls as he’s constantly asked to go above and beyond in order to get Olivia out of jams. This brings him closer and closer to the girl that he has met in AA, until she betrays him.

On Fitz’s side of Washington, Mellie is very hugely pregnant with Fitz’s baby. We assume that while things may still be a bit strained between the two they are working on their differences as Fitz seems to be a bit happier than he was most of Season One. We find out that this has nothing to do with Mellie and everything thing to do with the fact that he’s been talking to Olivia on the phone every night. This continues for a few episodes, and even culminates in him going to her apartment for advice one night and staying the entire night just holding her, until she decides to start seeing an ex. They manage to stay apart with each trying to make their separate relationships work until Fitz is shot three times on the way to his birthday party.
It seems that Huck was the one that shot Fitz, this is in fact not true and he’s being set-up by his girlfriend who at first wants to run away with him until she overhears him trying to reframe (is that what you call it when someone is framing the person for murder who framed them for that same murder in the first place?) her. She then does the unthinkable and slaughters an innocent family before running leaving Huck to take the fall. He does this without question until he realizes Fitz is still alive and still in danger. He is let go in an attempt to catch the actual shooter, which works, and then is freed from all charges.
While all of this has been happening Mellie has forged the unconscious Fitz’s signature in a bid to keep Sally Langston, who has already fired Cyrus, from taking Fitz’s job. She is quickly found out by Langston but before anything can be done Fitz wakes up and is able to stroll into a meeting. At first Langston wants to fight this and reveal him for being weaker than he claims to be but she quickly decides that what is best for the country is for Fitz to be backed solidly by his cabinet and she gives up the temporary position. Later in bed Fitz asks Mellie for a divorce.
My Thoughts:

I have been loving Scandal, I actually just started the series in December when it was on break and was able to catch-up before it restarted it. I’m loving the Olivia/Fitz relationship, Cyrus is great, and I’m just waiting for someone to bitch-slap Mellie. All that being said I’m kind of disappointed in this past season. In season one Olivia starts off as a strong and proud woman, who while having an affair with a married man doesn’t let that bring her down. Now she just seems to have become this limp rag of a woman who can only seem to keep it together when others keep it together for her. Shonda really needs to stay consitent with how she portrays her characters, there was nothing really drastic that happend to bring about such a great change in Olivia’s demenaor. She’s been having an affair with a married man, while I’m not condoning that, it has been going on for awhile, since before he was elected. So why now all of a sudden has she decided to take a page out of the “Only a man can save me” handbook? And this is really what it seems to have come down to if it isn’t Harrison doing things to pick up the trail of havoc that the U.S.S Olivia is leaving in her wake then it’s Huck, or David, or Cyrus, or even Fitz. Love the show, hate the change in Olivia’s demanour.
My Rating:
3 out of 5 stars. Would have given a 4 or even a 5 if it wasn’t for that damn attitude shift.
